Celebrities piled on the glamour for the Elle Style Awards. Denise Van Outen, Dannii Minogue and Oscar nominee Naomi Watts were among the stars who donned their finest for this showbiz event at London's Natural History Museum. Van Outen looked stunning in a black satin evening gown with plunging neckline. Other winners in the style stakes were Myleene Klass, in a strapless satin creation by Kyri, and The Office star Lucy Davis, in a cream halter neck dress by Ben de Lisi. Davis said she had turned to designer dressing after wearing a High Street outfit at the recent Golden Globes. "I've learnt my lesson because everyone at the Golden Globes kept asking 'what are you wearing?' and when I told them it was from Pilot they just looked blank. "So I've got this beautiful dress by Ben de Lisi and I've bought these shoes from Stella McCartney, which I love." Sadie Frost, Cat Deeley, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Louise Redknapp were also at the ceremony, as were tennis star Venus Williams and I'm A Celebrity star Lord Brocket. read more
Hollywood honours its geeks at pre-Oscar ceremony Garner hosted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Scientific and Technical Awards on the weekend. The ceremony is the pre-Oscar show where the movie industry honours people and companies that have advanced the process of film-making. The technical Oscars are usually presented a few weeks before the main Academy Awards in an annual gala that positions itself as something of a revenge of the Hollywood nerds. One winner joked that Garner was the best part of the evening. ""I want to thank the Academy for inviting Jennifer Garner here tonight. Now I can brag to my friends I spent Valentine's Day with Jennifer Garner,"" said Henrik Wann Jensen, who along with two colleagues won a certificate for their research into subsurface light scattering." read more
Scary Monsters Roam London Catwalk The London-based pair, known for their eccentric sense of humour and whimsical designs, sent unsmiling models out with upswept hair styled like the Bride of Frankenstein. They mixed acid greens and shocking pinks with drab olives and greys in a collection reflecting their contrasting tastes. "I'm the monster," said Antoni Burakowski, sipping from a miniature champagne bottle after the show. "Alison loves dull and drab things and I'm all gay and fancy." Monster motifs clashed with playful frills, pom-poms, sewn-on hearts and scoop necks in their collection for autumn and winter 2004. One knee-length skirt was emblazoned with a picture of a headless horse. They opened the show with a section called "Fat and Lazy," featuring Homer Simpson socks, crumpled gray linen dresses and chunky jumpers bearing the slogan "Go Faster." read more
At London Fashion Week, best of Britain Designers Arkadius and Betty Jackson presented the best examples of London's conflicting contribution to world fashion Monday — the capital's penchant for showing avant-garde innovation and its reputation for classic wearability. Polish-born Arkadius Weremczuk was inspired by a stylish woman walking through Warsaw, sending his models down the catwalk in sophisticated black and bronze miniskirted tunics. The designer — who sported the words Le Freak C'est Chic penciled above his top lip — added the quirky touches of massive heart-shaped earrings and tall hats to contrast elegance and freakiness. Jackson provided the more straightforward wearability with her Martinis in St. Moritz show, dressing her models in tweed turn-up trousers, belted jackets edged in black sequins and layered black and red evening gowns. Designer Alice Temperley followed in feminine suit with her collection inspired by The Apache, a gang of romantics who crossed between the worlds of the Parisian cabaret and its criminal fraternity in the 1900s. Temperley brought them back to life using jet beading, pearls, fine silk and decorative embroidery in hues of wine, navy, black, apricot and rose. read more
