Tasmania Tasmania is the smallest state in Australia (approximately 67,000 sq km in size) and is the only island state. Hobart is the capital and located in the south-east of the state. Tasmania is separated form mainland Australia by Bass Strait, a notoriously treacherous stretch of water. Due to its isolation it has maintained an untouched pristine beauty. Tasmania is steeped in history, which is evident in the architecture of the old buildings still present today. Tasmania is a trekker's paradise with vast tracks of unspoiled wilderness. Cradle Mountain and the Franklin River are excellent examples of the untamed beauty of the state. The weather, more often than not, is cold due to its southerly position. The higher areas in Tasmania are blanketed in snow over the winter months. Hobart Hobart is located in the south-east corner of Tasmania and nestled alongside the Derwent River. It is a pretty city mixing colonial architecture with the modern. It is relaxed and has a variety of shopping and eating places. Hobart offers several museums including the maritime Museum of Tasmania, The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the Van Diemes's Land Folk Museum. The Cascade Brewery, close to the city centre, offers tours of the facility. There is also many outdoor activities that can be enjoyed along the Derwent.

Geeveston Forest House is located in Geeveston near the Hartz Mountains National Park and less than 100km from Hobart. Out of town is the Tahune Forest with many lookouts in the area as well as the Huon River. Work can be found for backpackers during the apple season from this hostel.

Port Arthur Port Arthur is a popular tourist destination for its historical significance as a penal settlement for convicts who had committed further crimes. It has restored buildings and tours of the area.

Launceston Launceston is located on the Tamar river. It has all that is expected from a city of its size including museum, restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens. About 10 minutes walk from the city center is the Cataract Gorge with steep cliffs etched by the flow of the river. It is a popular tourist attraction.
